Common X ray flaw detectors

Oct. 07, 2022

Industrial X-ray flaw detectors are classified into portable and mobile (fixed) types according to their structure.

  1. Portable X-ray flaw detector

Portable X-ray flaw detector is specially designed for shipbuilding, petrochemical engineering, machinery, aerospace, transportation, construction and other industrial sectors to inspect the processing and welding quality of materials and parts such as hulls, pipes, high-pressure vessels, boiler vehicles, bridges, as well as various light metals, rubber, ceramics and other processed parts quality. X-ray radiography was used.

Common X ray flaw detectors

Internal defects of material machined parts and welds are shown on the film to evaluate the quality of the product.

There are two types of portable flaw detectors: directional radiation and circumferential radiation. Directional radiation is fixed and the cone angle of the radiation beam is generally in the range of 40°~45°. The circumferential radiation beam radiates X-ray at the same time, and is perpendicular to the X-ray tube axis at a 360° circumference. The flaw detection photos of the entire weld can be completed by exposure, which greatly improves the detection efficiency.

Portable flaw detectors have 2 different: glass X-ray tube and corrugated ceramic X-ray tube: Glass x-ray tubes are widely used at home and abroad because of their relatively simple manufacture and low cost of non-destructive testing. At present, corrugated ceramic X-ray tubes are mainly used in inverter-insulated portable x-ray machines. It has some features of cermet tube, such as long service life.

  1. Mobile X-ray flaw detector

Common X ray flaw detectors

Mobile X-ray flaw detector is one of the important equipment for non-destructive testing. Use metals, non-metals and other materials to make parts, cast welded parts for non-destructive testing, and determine their internal defects, slag cracks, pores, and poor welding (no welding)

Widely used in machinery, chemical industry, shipbuilding, high pressure vessels, defense industry, scientific research, aerospace, refractory and other industries. Complete functions high degree of automation, reliable performance, simple operation and fast detection speed.

Mobile X-ray flaw detectors are usually composed of controller, high-voltage generators, ray tube , cooling devices, high-voltage cables, low-voltage cables, etc.

  1. How to choose X ray flaw detectors

How to buy a suitable, economical and practical x-ray flaw detector according to your needs. Generally, the penetration ability of x ray flaw detection, the focus size of the x-ray tube, the shape of the workpiece to be inspected are selected.

The penetration ability of the x-ray flaw detector depends on the tube voltage, the harder x-ray the stronger the energy and the penetration ability is proportional to the square of the tube voltage. In addition, at the same tube voltage, it is also related to the material density and other properties of the workpiece under test, namely the attenuation capability of x-rays. For heavy metals such as steel and thick workpieces, due to their strong ability to attenuate x-rays, high tube voltage should be selected; for light metals and thin workpieces such as aluminum and PE, x-ray flaw detectors with low tube voltage can be selected.

For circular workpieces such as girth welding on boilers or vessels, choose a radiographic flaw detector with circumferential exposure to improve workpiece efficiency and reduce radiation damage.

For small workpieces and easy movement, mobile flaw detectors (fixed) x-ray flaw detectors can be selected, while portable x-ray flaw detectors can be tested for heavy or big equipment.
